How to Type in a Mixed Fraction on Your iPhone Calculator
If your 8-cylinder Chevrolet Camaro has 3 5/8 gallons of gas left and you have 1 1/2 gallons of spare gas in the trunk, you can figure out how many miles that will take you with the calculator on your iPhone. Calculate the decimal portion of the first mixed fraction, add the whole number to the result and store that in the calculator's memory. Calculate the value of the second mixed fraction, add the amount stored in memory and multiply that result by the Camaro's gas mileage, which is about 14 miles per gallon.
-
1.
Open the calculator on your iPhone. Press "mc" and "c" to zero out the calculator's memory and display.
-
2.
Calculate the fractional portion of the first mixed fraction 3 5/8, which is 5/8. Press "5 ÷ 8 =" to get 0.625, the decimal equivalent of 5/8.
-
3.
Press "+", "3" and then "=" to get the decimal equivalent of 3 5/8, which is 3.625.
-
4.
Press "m+" to store that amount in memory and press "c" to start with a clean slate.
-
5.
Press "1 ÷ 2 =" to calculate the decimal portion of the second mixed fraction, which is 0.5. Press "+" and "1" to add 1 and then touch "=" for the result, which is 1.5.
-
6.
Press "+" and then "mr" to recall the value of the first fraction and add it to the second fraction. Press "=" to display the result, which is 5.125.
-
7.
Press "* 1 4 =" to discover that you can travel approximately 71.75 miles on 5.125 gallons of gas in an 8-cylinder Chevy Camaro.
