How to Connect a Laptop to a GPRS Using a Phone

Most mobile phones with Internet access can act as modems and help connect a laptop to the Internet by sharing their GPRS connection. Even though 3G and Wi-Fi networks are increasingly popular nowadays, GPRS is still a good option because of the low budget data plans it offers. By using just a USB cable for your phone, you can easily set up your laptop to access the Internet.

  1. 1.

Connect your GPRS phone to your laptop using the USB cable. Wait for Windows to detect it.

  2. 2.

Point your mouse to the top-right corner of your screen. Click "Search."

  3. 3.

Type "Network and Sharing Center" (without quotes) in the Search box and select "Network and Sharing Center" from the list of results to open the Network and Sharing Center panel.

  4. 4.

Click "Set up a new connection or network" to open the New Connection wizard.

  5. 5.

Select "Set up a dial-up connection" and press "Next".

  6. 6.

Choose your mobile phone from the list of available modems. Click "Next".

  7. 7.

Type "*99#" (without quotes) in the "Dial-up phone number" text box.

  8. 8.

Choose a name for the connection and type it in the "Connection name" text box. Click "Create" and wait for Windows to connect your laptop to the Internet.
