How to Change a Macintosh Network Name

Each computer is uniquely identified on a network by its IP address, but it is easier to identify on a local network by its name. Macintosh computers are no different. Changing a Mac network name is relatively easy and involves setting a computer name using the Sharing section of the System Preferences. The entire process takes less than one minute.

    Click the Apple icon at the top left of your screen and click "System Preferences" in the drop-down menu to open the System Preferences menu.

    Click "Sharing" in the Internet & Wireless section.

    Click the "Edit" button in the Computer Name section.

    Change the Macintosh network name in the Local Hostname text drop-down box and click "OK."

    Change the name in the Computer Name text box in the Sharing window.

    Restart the Mac to use the new network name.
