How to Build Links Into GIF

Build links into a GIF image you embed into your Web page so that clicking on the GIF takes visitors to another page. Embedding images into your site requires only very basic knowledge of HTML, but the image must be hosted on your or someone else's Web space. Use "alt" text to make a description of the page hover over the image before a visitor clicks it.

  1. 1.

Log in to your Web host, navigate to the file manager and click the name of the page where you wish to insert the GIF. Choose "Edit."

  2. 2.

Scroll through the document until you reach the point where you want the GIF. Paste in the following code:

    <a href="http://www.mysite.com/targetpage.html" alt="Description of the site"><img src="http://mysite.com/image.jpg"></img></a>

  3. 3.

Open a new browser tab, then upload the image to your own Web server if it isn't already hosted online somewhere you have permission to use it. A free host like SendSpace or YouSendIt won't work, since the image needs to be stored as an actual image and not as the image file. Drag your mouse over the image's URL, then right-click and choose "Copy."

  4. 4.

Return to the HTML document, then drag your mouse over the URL behind the "img src=" tag, right-click and choose "Paste." Type in the URL of the page to which you want the image to direct, then type in a description of the page's content behind the "Alt" tag.

  5. 5.

Save the file. Open the site in a new browser tab or window and navigate to the page where the GIF is. Click the GIF to be taken to the target page.
