3 Main Qualities of an Effective Leader

Some companies have completely ineffective leaders; other companies have mediocre leaders who get the job done, and some companies have effective and successful leaders who help companies become the pinnacle of their industry. Effective leaders possess qualities that help them outline a plan for success and then bring their workforce together to realize that success.


  1. Few leaders have succeeded in bringing people together without listening to, talking to and empathizing with the people around them. A successful business leader must understand his employees and talk to them on a personal level. If a manager’s employees don’t truly know him – or like him – it’s unlikely that they’ll listen or be affected by anything he has to say. Successful business leaders listen to employee concerns, empathize with their problems and try to bring everyone together in a way that doesn’t leave anyone out. Most employees prefer to work for a manager who’s understanding and friendly rather than one who’s cold and makes decisions without regard for his workforce.


  1. All great leaders know what they want to accomplish. They have a vision in mind and they don’t get sidetracked or become bothered with insignificant problems. Managers who employ poor leadership techniques often have no plan for the future. They simply throw ideas at a wall and hope they stick. Visionaries develop an idea and create a road map for how to accomplish that idea. By doing so, they unite their workforce by clearly explaining what it is each employee needs to do. There’s little confusion and almost no disorganization under a visionary leader.


  1. Effective leaders motivate the people around them. They bring their employees together and inspire them to perform at a high level and accomplish goals. A successful business leader knows that he cannot do everything alone and that he needs his workforce. An effective leader empowers his employees and gives them a purpose. He ensures that employees understand how their actions affect the company and what waits for them if they accomplish their goals. By rewarding employees with promotions, raises and other rewards, effective leaders acknowledge an employee’s contribution and keeps the workforce hungry to improve. Motivational leaders want employees to succeed, and that desire rubs off on each employee.

Becoming an Effective Leader

  1. Some people may be born with leadership qualities, but that doesn’t mean they know how to take advantage of those qualities. Leaders grow from making mistakes and from taking risks and failing. By taking time to assess what leadership strategies worked and which ones failed and why, mediocre leaders go on to become effective ones. For example, suppose you tried a motivational tactic that backfired and led to low morale. Learn from that mistake by studying what went wrong.
